Fleas, Ticks and other External Parasites
In this section you will find products to help control external parasites. Most pets do get parasites, especially fleas from time to time. It is important to get flea control right and prevent infestations occuring. This is true for all pets but becomes particularly important if your pet has skin problems or is allergic to flea bites. To prevent flea problems occuring it is advisable to use a monthly spot-on preparation. If your pet already has fleas you will need to treat the environment as well, so use a household spray to get rid of the immature fleas which will be living in your carpets and furnishings no matter how clean your home is! Sometimes you might think that a flea product is "not working", but remember that it can take several months to get fleas under control even with the best of products. This is because of the life cycle of the fleas- not the efficacy of the product -so don't give up, keep going and eventually you will get rid of the fleas!

Frontline and Effipro Frontline is a well known and popular product available without a veterinary prescription. It is a spot-on preparation for the prevention and treatment of infestations with fleas and ticks. This product also controls biting lice.

Capstar Capstar may be used for the treatment of fleas on cats and dogs. It quickly kills adult fleas on the animal and is very useful when you can actually see fleas on your pet. Do remember that the majority of fleas will be in the environment so do use an appropriate environmental treatment as well as Capstar.

Household Sprays When your pet has fleas it is important to remember that many more will be in your carpets, soft furnishings, pet bedding and in the cracks and crevices of your floor. The only way to eliminate fleas is to control the fleas on your pet and the ones in the environment. For every flea you see on your pet there will be around 100 in the carpet! The main reason that people think their flea product is "not working" is because they have not treated the environment effectively and they are expecting a quicker result than is reasonable. If your pet has a flea problem allow at least 3 months to get things under control if you are doing everything correctly- much longer if you cannot treat all the cats , dogs and rabbits in the household regularly or if you do not treat the environment. Get fleas under control; treat all your pets and the house!

Tick Removal Ticks should be removed form your pet promptly because they can transmit diseases to your pet while they are feeding. The longer they are left the more likely it is that any diseases they are carrying will be passed on to your pet. If you are in doubt about your ability to remove ticks yourself consult your vet.

Insecticidal Shampoos Shampoos and washes may be used to control external parasites. Bathing your dog may also help to keep other allergens away from the skin and help to reduce irritation.

Xeno We all know that we should be routinely treating our pet dogs and cats for parasites but sometimes we can overlook our smaller friends!
Xeno is a product containing Ivermectin which will treat the common internal and external parasites of small mammals and birds.
Xeno is an easy to apply Spot-On product or spray and should be used monthly for the prevention of parasites in small caged pets.
Xeno will treat the parasites which commonly cause ear problems in rabbits, ferrets and guinea pigs, mange in guinea pigs, walking dandruff (cheyletiella) in rabbits and feather problems in birds.
If your pet has such an infestation you should repeat the initial treatment 2 and 4 weeks later. If the problem does not improve consult your veterinary surgeon.
